Berrow’s Worcester Journal Embraces AI to Revolutionize Journalism

In a bid to enhance journalistic efficiency and fact-checking, Berrow’s Worcester Journal, one of the world’s oldest surviving newspapers, has adopted artificial intelligence (AI). Established in 1690, the journal, now a free sheet in collaboration with the Worcester News, is part of Newsquest, the UK’s second-largest regional news publisher. Over the past year, Newsquest has introduced eight “AI-assisted” reporters across various newsrooms, utilizing a proprietary copywriting tool based on ChatGPT technology.

This innovative approach allows reporters to input essential but routine "trusted content," such as minutes from local council meetings, into the AI tool. The technology then transforms this information into concise news reports, adhering to the publisher’s style. The AI-assisted reporters handle routine content, enabling human reporters to focus on more nuanced tasks like attending events, meetings, and conducting investigations. Stephanie Preece, the editor of Worcester News, emphasizes that AI complements traditional journalism, freeing up reporters for more in-depth and interpersonal reporting.

While recognizing the skepticism surrounding AI in journalism, Jody Doherty-Cove, Head of Editorial AI at Newsquest, emphasizes the implementation of safeguards, including extensive training and a new code of conduct. AI-generated content undergoes editorial scrutiny, with a trained journalist responsible for inputting information into the tool, thereby mitigating concerns about accuracy. Newsquest’s CEO, Henry Faure Walker, highlights the practicality of AI during real-time news events. In a notable instance at the Hexham Courant in Northumberland, an AI-assisted reporter managed routine reporting, allowing a human reporter to focus on investigative work when a local news story unfolded unexpectedly.

As AI technology continues to evolve, the debate around its role in journalism persists. Newsquest envisions a future where AI tools are seamlessly integrated into newsrooms, enhancing productivity without compromising journalistic integrity. The shift towards AI adoption reflects broader industry trends, as traditional news outlets grapple with declining resources and the need for innovative solutions. The potential benefits of AI in journalism, including efficiency gains and expanded investigative capabilities, are acknowledged by industry experts. However, concerns about job displacement and ethical considerations persist. Against this backdrop, Newsquest's proactive approach aims to strike a balance, leveraging AI as a valuable tool while upholding journalistic standards and values.

In an era marked by declining local newspapers and the challenges posed by digital transformation, Berrow’s Worcester Journal acknowledges the imperative to reinvent and embrace change. For traditional media outlets, survival and relevance hinge on navigating evolving landscapes, utilizing technology responsibly, and maintaining a commitment to quality journalism.
