Consumer Empowerment through AI: Meta's Bold Venture with NLSIU

Meta, a leading social network company, announced its collaboration with the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) on a research project aimed at enhancing the efficiency of consumer grievance redressal systems through generative AI technologies. The initiative, supported by Meta, focuses on exploring the application of Llama 2, Meta's openly available large language model (LLM). The research aims to develop a citizen-centric chatbot and a decision-assist tool within the realm of consumer law. These AI tools are designed to guide consumers through the procedural aspects of drafting complaints and answering queries related to consumer law in India.

The National Law School of India University, in partnership with IIT Bombay and the Department of Consumer Affairs, will spearhead this comprehensive research project. The initiative also delves into how LLMs can assist both consumers and judicial authorities, all while maintaining oversight and control by human decision makers. Additionally, NLSIU and IIT Bombay plan to release a white paper, detailing the risk mitigation approaches employed and emphasizing the incorporation of responsible design principles at every layer of the technology stack. Meta's Vice President of Global Policy, Joel Kaplan, highlighted the company's commitment to exploratory research, open science, and collaborative efforts with academic and industry partners, emphasizing their decade-long dedication to advancing AI technologies for the benefit of diverse sectors and populations.
