Google's Bard Chatbot Receives Global Upgrade with Gemini Pro Language Model

Google has officially rolled out the Gemini Pro update for its Bard chatbot on a global scale. The tech giant revealed that the upgraded chatbot now supports over 40 languages, including but not limited to Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam. This latest development follows Google's introduction of its generative AI models – Gemini Ultra, Gemini Pro, and Gemini Nano – in December. Initially deployed for English conversations, the Gemini Pro model promises improvements in content understanding, summarization, reasoning, brainstorming, writing, and planning within the Bard chatbot.

While Google did not specify the extent of these enhancements, the global availability of Bard powered by Gemini Pro is anticipated to elevate user experience in more than 230 countries. The evolution of Bard's backend architecture adds to its complexity, starting with the LaMDA model in February 2023, followed by the PaLM 2 update later that year. Now, with the incorporation of the Gemini Pro model, the chatbot reaches a wider global audience, albeit with a series of model names that might seem perplexing to the average user.Google's commitment to linguistic inclusivity is underscored by the recent extension of its "Double check" feature, originally available in English, to support over 40 languages. This feature leverages Google Search to evaluate the coherence of results generated by Bard.

Google is introducing image generation support through the Imagen 2 model, enhancing the chatbot's capabilities with visual content creation. As of now, this feature is limited to English, allowing users to request images like "create an image of a futuristic car" within the chatbot interface. Notably, images generated by Bard will bear a SynthID digital watermark, developed by DeepMind, providing an additional layer of authenticity. In October, Google integrated Bard's AI capabilities into Google Assistant, enabling users to seamlessly plan trips or create grocery lists. The subsequent month saw Bard's availability to English-speaking teenagers, albeit with content restrictions to ensure the generation of safe and age-appropriate responses. These advancements position Bard as a versatile and sophisticated conversational tool with a growing global footprint.
