Microsoft Introduces DirectSR to Streamline AI Upscaling Technologies

Microsoft unveiled DirectSR, a groundbreaking API designed to streamline the integration of various AI super-resolution upscaling technologies, including DLSS, FSR, and XeSS. Developed in collaboration with industry giants AMD, Intel, and Nvidia, DirectSR is positioned as the pivotal link between games and a diverse array of super-resolution techniques. Game developers grapple with the cumbersome task of coding for each upscaling method individually, hindering seamless integration across platforms. DirectSR addresses this challenge by facilitating "multi-vendor SR through a common set of inputs and outputs," empowering developers to harness AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution, Intel XeSS, and Nvidia DLSS Super Resolution without the need for extensive adjustments.

This unified approach offers gamers a broader spectrum of options, allowing them to select the preferred upscaling method based on their graphics vendor, thereby optimizing performance without sacrificing image quality. According to Microsoft's blog post, a public preview of DirectSR on Windows will soon be accessible through the Agility SDK, compatible with both Windows 10 and Windows 11. Although specifics about DirectSR remain undisclosed, the API's potential compatibility with recently released graphics cards hints at its robust functionality.

Microsoft plans to provide further insights into DirectSR at the upcoming Game Developers Conference (GDC), positioning the technology as a game-changer in the realm of AI upscaling.While speculation initially surrounded Microsoft's 'Automatic Super Resolution' feature in Windows 11, touted for its AI-driven enhancements, DirectSR marks a strategic shift towards leveraging existing upscaling techniques to enhance gaming experiences.
