Salesforce Survey Reveals Widespread Ethical Concerns in Generative AI Usage at Work

A recent survey conducted by Salesforce has shed light on concerning trends in the workplace regarding the use of generative AI. The research, part of the Generative AI Snapshot Research Series titled 'The Promises and Pitfalls of AI at Work,' exposes that a significant 64% of users are passing off generative AI work as their own. More alarmingly, 41% of workers are found to be exaggerating their generative AI skills to enhance their job prospects, often without formal approval, training, or guidance from their employers.

The survey, encompassing insights from over 14,000 workers across 14 countries, underscores the critical role generative AI plays in career advancement. With 28% of workers currently using generative AI at work, over half of them lack formal approval. An additional 32% expect to integrate generative AI into their work soon, emphasizing the technology's continued penetration, whether or not it is under proper oversight.

Despite the recognition of generative AI's impact on careers, the study reveals a lack of training and guidelines. Nearly 7 in 10 global workers have not received training on the safe and ethical use of generative AI. Furthermore, the absence of clear company policies is evident, with 87% of healthcare industry workers reporting a lack of clear guidelines, posing potential risks given the sensitive data in their possession. A concerning 39% of global workers state that their employers do not hold strong opinions about generative AI use in the workplace.

As governments worldwide work on regulations for responsible AI use, the survey indicates a gap in the implementation of clear policies within businesses. Paula Goldman, Chief Ethical and Humane Use Officer at Salesforce, emphasizes the need for investing in employee education and clear guidelines to unlock AI's full potential while addressing associated risks.
