In a bid to reimagine the way users engage with daily news, Paris-based startup Capsule is on a mission to become the "Spotify for news." Unlike traditional news aggregators, Capsule integrates AI technology and human editorial curation within its user-friendly app. The app adopts a vertical scrolling feed, reminiscent of social media platforms, presenting news as headlines accompanied by photos or screenshots of posts from platforms like X and LinkedIn. Users can tap on headlines to access news summaries and have the option to follow links to the original source for the full article or social post.
Co-founders Jérôme Boé and Arthur de Villemandy draw inspiration from their previous ventures—Boé's short-form video app, Snax, and de Villemandy's business-focused newsletter, "Magma." The duo seeks to make quality news more accessible by leveraging a network of curators. Capsule plans to organize news similar to how Spotify organizes music, creating "playlists" of news and offering personalized recommendations to users.
Capsule distinguishes itself from traditional news aggregators by employing AI to distill essential information from articles. A team of 10 global freelancers, described as "avid readers with a unique perspective," complements this effort. These curators, focused on trends and insights for modern leaders, add additional research to provide users with a comprehensive understanding. Capsule emphasizes quality and relevance, avoiding metrics such as social shares or likes.
AI plays a crucial role in Capsule's ability to curate related news stories, offering users a selection of similar articles beneath each piece. This approach aims to enhance the depth and breadth of the reading experience. Capsule has tapped into over 400 news sources, setting it apart from other news-sharing apps with no current limitations on news sources.Currently, Capsule operates with a four-person team and is bootstrapping its startup. However, co-founder Boé hints at a potential freemium model in the future, contingent on perfecting user experience and gaining traction in the market. As Capsule continues to evolve, it aspires to redefine how users consume and engage with news content.
