Unlocking Earth's Treasures: GSI Embraces AI for Faster, Smarter Mineral Exploration

In a strategic move toward revolutionizing mineral exploration, the Geological Survey of India (GSI) has unveiled plans to incorporate cutting-edge technologies, including drones, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Machine Learning (ML). This forward-looking initiative aims to elevate the efficiency and precision of mineral exploration, subsequently saving valuable time and resources while uncovering concealed mineral deposits, as outlined in an official statement.Janardan Prasad, Director General of GSI, highlighted the increasing popularity of integrating AI and ML technologies into mineral exploration. Leveraging time-tested machine learning algorithms, these advancements are proving instrumental in accurately delineating potential areas for mineralization.

Prasad emphasized the role of AI in generating 4D models, incorporating a temporal component that enables the dynamic reproduction of geological structures and the reconstruction of past deformation histories within geological formations. These insights were shared during a workshop hosted by GSI, underscoring the organization's commitment to staying at the forefront of technological advancements.During the workshop, Mines Secretary V L Kantha Rao urged exploration agencies and startups specializing in exploration to concentrate on critical minerals, potash, and concealed deposits. Rao emphasized the imperative role of new-age technology, particularly AI and ML, in expediting mineral exploration activities across the country. He pointed out that traditional methods of processing geoscientific data are not only time-consuming and expensive but also occasionally fall short in terms of accuracy.
